r iPhone 4 Sales 1.7 million Phones

1.7 muh-muh-million! That’s how many iPhone 4 handsets that Apple has sold in the three days since its June 24 launch, which is being touted as the company’s “most successful product launch” in Apple’s history.

Apple, Inc. announced Monday morning
that iPhone 4 sales have exceeded even their own hopes and dreams, with 1.7 million handsets snapped up in the three days since the June 24 launch. While they didn’t specify it in their press release, that figure is presumed to include the 600,000 pre-orders placed on June 15, which puts the walk-in orders around 1.1 million.

“This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.”

AppleInsider notes that the iPhone 4 numbers “shatter last year’s record, when the iPhone 3GS sold a million units in its first three days.” The numbers also exceed most analysts’ expectations, who had pegged the number at closer to 1.5 million at launch.

The original iPhone in 2007 took 74 days to reach its first million buyers; the iPhone 3G in 2008 squashed that record in its first three days of sales.

Not bad for a fourth-generation handset that has been the subject of incessant complaints about wireless reception when held the wrong way for its entire launch weekend…
