Michael Sam has yet to lace up his cleats in a official NFL game however he is already winning awards. The former SEC defensive player of the year and the 34th pick of the St. Louis Rams in the 7th round has won the Arthur Ashe award for courage.

Michael Sam made headlines earlier in the year for publicly announcing on ESPN that he was gay become the first gay player to play in the NFL. Despite the possibly of not being drafted or accepted by his peers, Michael Sam’s announcement took courage and strength in the eyes of many including ESPN so he is being rewarded tonight.
