Labor Day, let alone Labor Day WEEKEND, is a BIG deal in New York City, especially if you’re of West Indian descent. Friday through Sunday, the celebrations have been non-stop throughout all of the city’s boroughs; leading up to Monday’s West Indian Day Parade on Eastern Parkway. To kick things off, Hot 97 presented their annual On Da Reggae Tip concert on September 4th. This year, however, Soca was added into the mix. Thus, Hot 97 Presents On Da Reggae & Soca Tip, was created.
Not necessarily a tropical island, but an island nonetheless, Governors Island was filled with sounds of the Caribbean from Sunset to Midnight on Friday. The event was hosted by Hot 97’s own, DJ Bobby Konders & Jabba. One by one, throughout the night, popular Reggae artists Assassin, Collie Buddz, Barrington Levy, Gyptian, Konshens and Ding Dong, transformed the concert into one massive dancehall party. There were also guest appearances by Majah Hype, Angela Hunte, and more, throughout the evening.
It was Soca superstar, Machel Montano, however, who not only closed out the show, but gave one helluva performance. Trini flags filled the air, waistlines whined uncontrollably, and the crowd couldn’t stop jumping, throughout his entire set. Machel performed hit songs such as “Carnival” and “Party Done.”
