The Houston Texans are gaining new fans with each episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” and they now have named their new starting quarterback. After beating out Ryan Mallet, the Houston Texans have named former Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer their new starting quarterback.

According to ESPN,

The Houston Texans have named Brian Hoyer as their starting quarterback, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Tania Ganguli.

The NFL Network was first to report the Texans’ decision to choose Hoyer, who had been battling with Ryan Mallett for the starting job throughout training camp.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien is expected to address the media later Monday.

Hoyer, 29, started Houston’s preseason opener earlier this month against San Francisco while Mallett started Saturday’s game against Denver. Neither quarterback was able to get the Texans into the end zone against the Broncos, prompting O’Brien to call the competition “very even.”

Hoyer and Mallett both have served as backups to Patriots quarterback Tom Brady at one point in their respective careers.

Mallett, 27, started two games last season, his first in Houston, before suffering a pectoral injury and missing the rest of the year.

Hoyer signed a two-year, $10.5 million with the Texans this past offseason after spending the last two years with the Cleveland Browns.

The Texans have been Super Bowl contenders for sometime but the play of their quarterback has always hunt them in the long run, maybe they feel Hoyer can change all that. Stay tuned to HHS1987 for all your sports news.
