Wale Talks Being Advised By Rick Ross & Jay-Z Not To Release ‘Festivus’ For Free & ‘The Album About Nothing’ (Video)

After his annual headlining performance at the Filmore in Silver Springs, Maryland where he kicked off his ‘Simply Nothing’ tour, Wale was greeted by a rep from HotNewHipHop to chop it up about his recently released mixtape Festivus & his forthcoming LP, The Album About Nothing. Wale informed us all that his mixtape & his album will be nothing to compare to one another. Festivus copped features from rappers such as Pusha T, Chance The Rapper, Ab-Soul, & MMG’s latest success, Fat Trel. The Album About Nothing will have absolutely no features. The DMV emcee let us know that the most you will hear from other artists on his album are hooks from J. Cole & Jeremih.

This is the most creative musical experience I’ve ever tried to offer. One of those things that you gonna get this joint or you not. A lot of people ain’t gonna get it, but the people that get it are gonna say it’s genius. This is my moment to show what I can do from a music director standpoint.

We also learned that Wale was advised by his label boss, Rick Ross, & former RocNation management boss, Jay-Z, not to release any music for free. Despite the advice given by two of the games heaviest hitters, he dropped Festivus anyway.

I feel a little uncomfortable when I don’t give people [music],” he says. “Jay and Ross, they was like, ‘don’t drop no free project.’ I’m just like, ‘I can’t even sleep at night. I have to.’ I’m sleeping better now. I’m sleeping ’til 9 o’clock in the morning.

If you have yet to grace your ears with the traditional sounds we love from Wale, we got you. Stream his latest project Festivus here.

The Album About Nothing is slated for a 03.31.15 release date.
