Aside from the news of the trade shocking many sports fans, the results of the trade will be that must more surprising. With Alex Smith set to be Washington’s quarterback for the next 5 years, it means current Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins will be a free agent this offseason. Washington has also agreed to 4 year extension with Alex Smith paying him up to $94 million with $71 million in guaranteed money.

This isn’t the first time Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has traded a franchise quarterback to Washington. As the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid traded Donovan McNabb to Washington a few years ago as well. Sometime to watch for is that although announced today, the trade would be official until March, anything can happen in the next few weeks.
