Please tell me this is just a nightmare. After a free agent frenzy took the Philadelphia area by storm late this summer, football fans across the nation were stamping the Eagles tickets to Indy for the Super Bowl. With the signings of big play names such as Cullen Jenkins and Vince Young their was much talk of Philly being a dream team. As of lately the dream had seemed to be more of a nightmare.
After winning against a beat up St. Louis Rams team in the season opener the Eagles have blown three straight fourth quarter leads and have dropped to 1-3 the worst record in the NFC East. Before yesterday’s lost to the 49ers much of the Eagles issues seemed to fall on the Offensive line not protecting Vick and Vick suffering injuries in two of the four games. Yesterdays lost fell mainly on the highly paid defenses shoulders.
Despite the loss Quarterback Michael Vick has a phenomenal game passing 30/46 for 416 with two touchdown passes and one pick on a tipped pass and rushing eight times for 75 yards. Desean Jackson also had a big game catching 5 passes for 171 yards, his best game of this young season.
The Eagles problems as of now seem to be deeper than the Atlantic ocean. There is a weird attitude in the locker room and game day body language shows some of these guys may not be able to live or play up to all the hype surrounding them. The 20 point lead the Eagles give up to the 3-1 49ers in the fourth quarter was the franchise’s biggest blown lead since the 1999 21 point lead blown to the Arizona Cardinals.
The Birds don’t have much time to point fingers or complain. Sunday’s game against the red hot 3-1 Buffalo Bills is a mid-season must win game for Andy Reid and his troops. Only 14% of teams who start 1-3 have went on to make the playoffs. If this team is championship material we will find out over the next few weeks.
