One of the most dramatic stories in the NBA this season has been Dwight Howard and the media circus that’s surrounded his season long trade request. After a desperation move to save Howard’s Magic career the Orlando brass fired not only former Head Coach Stan Van Gundy but also former GM Otis Smith. So who will lead Orlando’s troops during the 2012-13 season? Can he persuade Howard to remain in Blue, black and white?
The Magic have over looked candidates such as Brian Shaw and Patrick Ewing and have selected former Magic PG and Spurs assistant coach Jacque Vaughn as their new head coach. The 37-year-old former PG retired from the NBA in 2009 and averaged 6 points and 3 assists for the T-Mac-led Orlando Magic in the 2002-03 NBA season.
A team official said the Magic will hold a news conference Monday afternoon to introduce Vaughn, a former NBA point guard who spent the past two seasons as a San Antonio Spurs assistant coach. Vaughn’s task get the young team in rebuilding mode and begin to emphasize developing young players. Vaughn is idely viewed within NBA circles as bright, hard-working and organized but is also questioned due to lack of head coaching experience a issue the Magic don’t see as a concern.
With the hiring of Vaughn can he do enough to get Howard to stay or has that boat already sailed????
