Week 16 Edges Closer to Playoffs and Broken Records
Week 16 for the NFL gets a close as a player to could to either breaking or almost breaking a regular season record. For a couple of players, that means getting closer to breaking records that haven’t been broken in years or celebrating a record thats now broken. The player most are hoping breaks a record is Adrian Peterson. Adrian “All Day” Peterson has been a running back for the Minnesota Vikings since 2007. He’s a Vikings star player who didn’t play after December 2011 due to MCL and ACL tears. Peterson is currently the front-runner for Most Valuable Player after a miraculous comeback less than nine months after surgery. He is also 208 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson of the St. Louis Rams NFL single-season rushing yards record from 1984. Dickerson’s record is 2,105 yards. Will he catch it? Most likely not, the Vikings didn’t feed him the ball very well against the Houston Texans. Breaking the record is doable but it’ll be difficult.
Week 16: Record Broken
Another record breaker was silent and less celebrated than the predicted record Peterson could break. Calvin “Megatron” Johnson of the Detroit Lions has broken NFL single-season receiving yards record with 1,892 yards. Jerry Rice of the San Francisco 49ers held the record for 17 years recording 1,828 yards. On a special football night in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons, Johnson celebrated the record with his father at the end of the play by giving his father the game ball. Calvin Johnson plans to join the 2,000 yards club at the end of the season with only 108 yards to go.
Week 16: Chasing History
Lastly, JJ “Swatt” Watt of the Houston Texans is on the verge of breaking NFL single-season record of sacks. JJ Swatt has been maneuvering through the NFL all season shutting offensive lines and quarterbacks down single-handedly. Watt needs 2.5 sacks next week in order to break Michael Strahan’s 2001 record. Currently, Watt added one sack in Week 16 game against the Vikings brining his total sack statistic to 20.5. Also close to this record is the San Francisco 49ers’ Aldon Smith who is a sack behind Watt at the BEGINNING of the Sunday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks. I didn’t know how hard solo sacks were to get but there is a chance that this record can be broken by either player.
2012 is a good year to break records and chase history in the NFL especially in Week 16!
