Georgetown Participates in the 2013 Puerto Rico Tip-Off

The Georgetown men’s basketball team will play the Northeastern Huskies in the first round of the 2013 Puerto Rico Tip-Off taking place November 21 – 24 at Roberto Clemente Coliseo in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Tip-Off, founded in 2007, will feature eight teams. Aside from the Hoyas and Huskies the other participating teams are; Charlotte, Florida State, Kansas State, Long Beach State, Michigan, and VCU.

The 2013 bracket was announced earlier Tuesday morning. There will be three other first round games along with the Hoyas vs. Huskies between Charlotte vs. Kansas State, Long Beach vs. Michigan, and Florida State vs. VCU.

All of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off games will be televised on ESPN2, ESPN3, and ESPNU and will be one hour ahead of Eastern Time. ESPN3 will air one game. ESPNU will air five games and ESPN2 will air three games including the Championship game on Sunday, November 24 at 7 p.m. ET.

Last year’s winners were the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Alabama won it in 2011, Minnesota in 2010, Villanova in 2009, Xavier in 2008, and Miami won the first ever Puerto Rico Tip-Off in 2007.

The Best First Round Game

The best first-round game in my opinion will be Georgetown Hoyas vs. Northeastern Huskies. They’ve got similar stats, which are going to make an interesting matchup without Otto Porter, now in the NBA. Most likely, Hoyas will allow Greg Whittington take over since he’s similar in size at stature to Porter.

Hoyas are better than Huskies in defense but Huskies top Hoyas on offense. You need both to win this Tip-Off and I believe both teams will put on a show.

I love the idea of this tournament because even though Puerto Rico is apart of the United States, it still gives these faculty and players ideas of different cultures. It also expands the viewership of ESPN networks and American college basketball in other parts of the world. The guys may not be able to enjoy the Puerto Rican culture as much as they would like but hey, not many people even get to go.
