Johnny Manziel and His Expectations May Not Translate Well Come Fall
Johnny Manziel is the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. There have been reports that the life of a superstar is finally hitting Johnny Football. Winning the Heisman was a great honor but the media attention that came along with it was not.
There have been reports about Manziel (@JManziel2) tweeting about leaving Texas A&M but those tweets were later deleted.
His first read, “Bulls— like tonight is a reason why I can’t wait to leave college station…whenever it may be.” Probably after a bum rush of responses he then tweeted, “Don’t ever forget that I love A&M with all of my heart, but please please walk a day in my shoes.”
Is the pressure getting to him?
Prior to the 2012 season, he was just an unknown freshman that wasn’t allowed to speak to the media. Now, he’s the youngest college superstar the media loves to criticize. But who can blame them when he keeps throwing himself in the spotlight? NBA Finals games, clubs, talkshow appearances, all can blow up the ego of a 20-year-old. It’s all in good fun and entertainment and he hasn’t acted out at any of those events. His only crime was attending so many. Since his Twitter debacle, he’s been laying low: until recently.
The Texas A&M quarterback has missed practice sessions and meetings of the 2013 Manning Passing Academy due to “illness”. Manziel was taking on the role of college coach/camp counselor at the Academy held at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. According to ESPN.com, a camp spokesman released a statement explaining why Manziel left Saturday afternoon.
Manning Passing Academy Statement and Peyton Manning Comments
“Johnny Manziel did participate in some activities in the 2013 Manning Passing Academy as a college counselor/coach,” the statement said. “After missing and being late for practice assignments, Johnny explained that he had been feeling ill. Consequently, we agreed that it was in everyone’s best interest for him to go home a day early.”
Peyton Manning also weighed in according to ESPN.com,
It was Manziel’s first appearance as college coach/counselor at the passing academy after he had been a camper twice during his high school years. “I enjoyed meeting Johnny,” said Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning “I can remember a 20-year-old Eli [Manning] missing a meeting and catching some flak. We always have counselors who leave early. Johnny was great with the campers for the time he was here. He had to leave early. I wish him the best and I want him to come back as a counselor next year.”
With the shenanigans we’ve experienced from Manziel already he still has high expectations for the fall. With the negative attention coming his way now, Johnny Manziel may not live up to explosive expectations Aggies fans have for his sophomore season. If he proves us all wrong, it will speak to his character and that’s what I’m hoping for. Check out this video from ESPN’s Youtube account!
Johnny Manziel Expectations for Summer and Fall 2013
“Last season was a big question mark. Last year, I had my own personal goals and really had high standard for myself and this year the bar is elevated even further, so not only for me but for the team and guys on the team as well. There’s a lot of expectations but for us we just need to handle it the same way and go out and play the game we all love to play,” said Manziel in an interview with ESPN.
