A year and a half after the well-received EP Da Oceans, Alexandria, Virginia rapper JABB is back with his new project, Da Oceans II. Coming from humble beginnings in the Washington, DC area, JABB linked up with local favorites like Black Cobain and the Board of Administration early, before heading on his own independent path. For years, the 21-year old rapper has been creating diverse music ranging from storytelling Hip Hop and wordplay-heavy rap to turnt-up tracks and street tales.
Aside from collaborating with Cobain and other like-minded artists, JABB has opened for rappers like Shy Glizzy, the Slutty Boyz, and Young Moe at universities like Penn State, UNC and Virginia State. JABB has been covered and reviewed in publications and websites such as the Washington City Paper, Wale’s The Blog About Nothin’, Traps N’ Trunks and JukeBOXDC. He has also caught the attention of nationally-respected DJs like DJ Enuff from Hot 97, mixtape buzz-maker DJ Grady and DJ Heat from Washington’s WPGC 95.5.
With no features on Da Oceans II except for a Black Cobain verse, this collection of amazing songs is more like an album (like Jay-Z’s Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life) than a mixtape. With street stories, braggadocios lyrics, a girl song that everyone can enjoy and hundreds of quotable bars, this is one project you don’t want to miss. Most of the hard-hitting, sample-based production come from frequent collaborators Elusive Orkestra (who has worked with Lupe Fiasco, Rico Love and more) and Jay Cornell (credits from Wale, Meek Mill and Chief Keef.) These beats back crazy wordplay and content worthy of any lyrical rapper’s album.
To some, comparisons to artists like Jay-Z may seem premature, but take a listen to the project in it’s entirety after the jump first before you dismiss the well deserved claims!
