Hip-Hop Artist J. Jackson has been very busy during the first quarter of 2017. Between dropping visuals for fan favorites like Eastside Story and Jamaica Freestyle to promote his debut album June 28th, produced by the legendary Ski Beatz, Jackson found time to release another visual for his Eddie Kendricks Freestyle before taking off to #SXSW2017 to perform fan-favorites & preview exclusive new material from his forthcoming debut on the DigiWaxx stage.
The Eli+Visual Index directed video for Eddie Kendricks Freestyle was released on 3/13 in homage to Jackson’s hometown of Detroit (area code: 313) and features the ghostly background vocals of the Motown Records recording artist 1977 single Intimate Friends. From the title of the Eddie Kendricks original to the history of the song (Intimate Friends being the last single release from Kendricks’ last Motown album Slick), Jackson’s video opens with the star rhymer overlooking the city of New York from a Brooklyn rooftop. In place of the braggadocios lyrics and brunt delivery, Eddie Kendricks Freestyle displays a more introspective side of Jackson as he recounts his journey from Detroit’s east side to his current day success. From insecure friends, to changing relationships, to the temptation of distraction- Jackson rhymes in a stream of conscious that is almost too close for comfort, but enjoyably so. Listen closely as Jackson closes one chapter of his career while inviting us to watch for the next with Eddie Kendricks Freestyle.
