On his debut album, Like I Said I Would, Ethan Taylor leaves his mark on the musical landscape through impressive songwriting paired with sharp vocals, refined rhymes, and impeccable production choices. Those elements make for an incredibly honed and polished listening experience that the Roxboro, NC native set out to accomplish when crafting this record.
“I wanted everything to be right so I took my time and wanted to continue to work until the demand was there,” he says of the two-year process that resulted in Like I Said I Would. He adds that none of the writing or production was rushed.
It’s clear to tell that Taylor made sure everything was right when you hear how it all, from the lyrics to the instrumentals, gels together. And it makes sense when you consider that only three names (G Beats, Chaka Harley, and A-List Productions) provided the production. It allows for a sense of mature cohesion that is sometimes lacking on a debut release, but not here.
Like I Said I Would truly feels like the culmination of that painstaking labor, and it’s all the better for it. Whether it’s a standout single like “Waiting,” the dynamic title track, or his personal favorite cut “Say It Ain’t So,” there’s an intimacy and thoughtfulness to what you hear on the album.
“I put my all into this,” Taylor says, adding that he may be young at 27, but he has been chasing his dream and working to get to this level for years. It may mean that he puts some pressure on himself to succeed, but he doesn’t see that as a bad thing. “The pressure serves as fuel to succeed and hurry up and change my life and the lives of my family and friends as soon as possible.”
With the release of Like I Said I Would, it’s easy to see that he’s moving closer to making those dreams a reality. Like I Said I Would is available now through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms via Supreme Regime.
