There’s hot girl summer, and there’s also chill girl summer, which isn’t to say they are mutually exclusive. Tasha The Amazon is on both with “Not The Same,” a track markedly more melodic and summery than her previous singles from the upcoming Black Moon. “Not The Same” has Tasha reflecting on her couch-surfing past in Toronto and comparing it to her jet-setting life as a rapper, saving time for her day 1s and shutting down anyone who was fake along the way. Her motive? “This track just came out of me because my vibe is chill and positive this season.”
“Not The Same” comes off Tasha The Amazon‘s forthcoming Black Moon, a brand new chapter for her. A Toronto native of Jamaican and German descent, Tasha made her mark on her city’s music scene with her raucous stage performances and with warehouse parties notorious for getting shut down by the police (she’s even been known to pour vodka down audience members’ throats mid-show). In late 2016, Tasha broke through with Die Every Day, which earned a nomination at the Juno Awards, Canada’s biggest music awards, for Rap Recording of the Year (the same category as Drake’s Views, for comparison). When you know her musical background — classical training, love of hard-core punk, and rap — it’s no wonder this new chapter of Tasha is dark, melodic, and wildly energetic.
