Behind the guise of decorated vodka bottles, the elaborately-clad girls who carry them to tables and lines that extend around street corners, the club scene is a well-oiled machine that relies on a significant driving force: promoters and their recruitment styles. How are they getting people, mainly girls, to occupy tables with them?
StayLitG is a name you should get familiar with. Growing up in between Virginia & Somalia, he came onto the music scene in 2018, but not as an artist, as a very well known promoter / dot connector. Grabbing influence from different shifts of culture from living in Somalia and Virginia are a huge part of StaylitG’s story. He references gaining inspiration from not only big afro-beats artist such as Burna Boy but also the gate keepers of Virginia such as Timbaland, Pharrell and The Clipse.
While social media has helped promoters and artists, gain a lot of traction in recent years, many are now going back to the basics: making in-person connections with the people by performances, kind of like a club. Although no shows are going on during covid, StayLitG will have no problem bringing a crowd through once these dark times are over!
Social media’s made it easy, but it’s also made people really lazy with outreach,” said VA-based Artist “StayLitG,”. “I prefer talking to people in person because not everyone has social media.”
Although it may not be every artist and promoter’s preferred recruitment method, social media has played an undeniable role in helping them exploit their names and finding people to bring out. This is due to easy access to a lot of people through DMing and commenting under Instagram posts. As more young people have moved onto Instagram from Facebook, so have promoters, according to artist StayLitG who still keeps in close contact with his old club promoter friends.
