After a black woman was attacked by a Chicago police officer who was walking her dog, the officer was placed on administrative duties.
Video footage from the viral video shows Nikkita Brown walking her dog in a lakefront park. Shortly after midnight, she was approached by an officer who informed her that the park had closed. He then followed Brown and attempted to take her cell phone as she walked away. As she fled from the officer, he grabbed her. In the legal opinion of Brown’s lawyer, the officer assaulted her “violently” “without any reason.”
According to Brown’s attorneys, while he tries to tackle her, he grabbed her body as she screamed for help. She is knocked out of her shoes and her phone is knocked out of her hand during this unprovoked attack, which lasts for approximately two minutes.
Lori Lightfoot, the mayor of Chicago, called the video troubling. “I watched the vidOn Monday (Aug. 30), Lightfoot said: “I was rather disturbed by what I saw.”.30). She appeared to be leaving the beach as the officer directed her.
Legal counsel for Brown believes it was a racially motivated attack. After closing hours, not only did there appear to be more people in the park, but no one was attacked or approached by officers. There was no doubt that there was racial profiling going on in this case, the lawyers said. According to the statement, Brown is also suffering psychological trauma as a result of the “brutal, unprovoked, and unlawful attack.”
David Brown, the Chicago Police Supt., discussed the incident on Monday. The only thing we know for certain is that the beach was apparently closed prior to the encounter,” he said. “We know only that much.” In light of this incident, Lightfoot urged Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) to work with extreme urgency towards resolving this matter so that we are aware of exactly what took place.
“This is a fairly straightforward case. I’m concerned by what I’ve seen in the video,” the mayor said.
