In the past few years, Doja Cat has taken the music industry by storm (starting in 2014) and has performed with ease, almost like a shark smelling blood and responding accordingly. In the last few years, she has established herself as a prominent figure. It’s not just her music, but her charming personality that makes her so memorable. She has developed a fanbase that resembles the followers of Nicki Minaj (Barbz) or Rihanna (Rihanna Navy) or Beyonce (Beyhive) – meaning fans will go to the moon for her at any given time. Her third studio album, Planet Her, comes after her quite successful first two albums.
As a follow up to her 2019 Gold certified album Hot Pink (which by now should’ve been platinum by now, but that’s another story altogether), Planet Her offers another remarkable album. When Doja Cat says, “Thank you, Nicki, I love you” at the end of “Get Into It (Yuh)”, she acknowledges the inevitable comparisons between herself and other female rappers, such as Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. Doja Cat’s ability to switch between the razor-sharp soundcloud rapper and Grammy-approved musician seamlessly makes her stand out from the crowd. Songs like “Payday” and “Ain’t Shit” demonstrate their influence, but Doja Cat’s versatility sets her apart.
In an interview with V Magazine, Doja previously said that Planet Her aims to provide a “divine feminine” while he described collaborating with artists such as Ariana Grande and Young Thug. Doja said that SZA, The Weeknd, and J.I.D are people she respects, adding: “I feel like this is a complete circle for me and I’m very excited to have them on the album.” SZA’s presence alone is sexy for me. I love it. I feel confident. You know, it doesn’t feel like something that came from yourself? I feel like I’m pursuing what I’m passionate about.”
