One in four African-Americans suffers from some form of mental illness, and Black people are 20% more likely to have mental health problems than the general population. Although the stigma around mental health within communities of color have been somewhat reduced in recent years, there is still a long way to go. To this day I’ve always considered myself a “Hip Hop Head,” and the music serves as one of the areas I go to “equip”, serving as a source of personal development and motivation. Hip hop has helped me better understand how to handle life’s high and low moments, develop a growth mindset and a sense of emotional intelligence, move from past traumas, and even learn more about myself in manhood.
So for years this genre of music has been a form of therapy for me. However, recently I actually found it was a real therapeutic practice developed in 1998 by a black researcher and clinician from New Jersey, Dr. Edgar Tyson.
To help shed light on this practice, i’ve decided to dedicate Season 8 of the Solomon Tention Podcast to millennials who desire a different therapeutic approach to addressing their mental health. Myself and a few guests will be discussing the intersections of our shared experiences, hip hop, therapy, lyrics by various hip hop artists, and sharing different perspectives to help us evolve into our highest selves.
“The Solomon Tention Podcast” explores questions about human experience, leadership, entrepreneurship, and culture. “The Solomon Tention Podcast Unfiltered” was launched this past spring and focuses on sharing stories and perspectives of everyday individuals focused on inspiring millennials towards purpose.
This new Hip Hop Therapy new series will be released December 31st and listeners can subscribe to the “The Solomon Tention Podcast” via ITUNES HERE and “Solomon Tention Podcast Unfiltered” via YouTube HERE. Both can be found on all major podcast streaming and download platforms including YouTube, Amazon, IHeart Radio, Audible, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and many more
