I Was Curious is the new full-length mixtape from the young, burgeoning artist, MOJA. It’s the culmination of growth from his first two projects, solidifying his unique sound.
MOJA is a hip-hop artist from New Jersey who started making music in 2014. In 2020, he released his debut EP, Earthquake. He continued to progress, and released his follow-up EP, Arboretum, on Earth Day, 2022. This latest project is made up of instrumentals that feel surreal and dream-like, and delves into themes of romance and curiosity. The intro track, “Aureliana,” is a song that can easily get stuck in your head for days, and smoothly transitions to a chopped-and-screwed ending. Another highlight of the record is “Door (Curiosity),” which has a more mellow vibe. This track illustrates MOJA’s versatility, and satisfies an audience that’s looking for something to complement the more up-tempo songs presented here.
Tracks like “Guatelinda,” featuring fellow Colmado Music Group artist, 1OAKJason, serve a dual-purpose. The outro is one of several moments that show the more playful side of the record. It also continues MOJA’s pattern of seamlessly bringing an international feel to each of his projects. We consistently see French and Spanish influences, as well as nods to his native Jamaica.
MOJA’s new mixtape, I Was Curious, is different from the usual Hip-Hop sound. The instrumentals are unique, the melodies are catchy, and MOJA’s delivery strikes a perfect middle-ground between singing and traditional rap.
