A few hours before Rocky took the stage, hardcore punk phenoms Turnstile made their Rolling Loud debut, making them the first rock band to perform a set at a Rolling Loud event. Though they may seem like a surprising fit for the festival, the culture and sounds of hip-hop and guitar-based music have been on a collision course for years. Playboi Carti’s headlining set on Friday made ample use of nu-metal riffs, and artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Trippie Redd have incorporated punk aesthetics and sounds into their “rage rap” milieu. Fans at the main stage were more than ready for Turnstile, whose melodic punk sound resonated and inspired nearly as rapturous a reaction as the more familiar artists. It’s safe to say that Turnstile won some new fans at Rolling Loud Miami.
