TikTok announced the launch of the #WomenInHipHop campaign yesterday, highlighting established and emerging female rappers who are shifting the culture with their tunes. Running from February 22 to March 8 in tandem with Black History Month and Women’s History Month, the two-week-long initiative celebrates women in rap who are trailblazers in the genre through playlists, exclusive artists interviews in partnership with MuchMusic, and more! Additionally, TikTok is honoring Ice Spice and Maiya The Don as two of the 15 honorees on the first-ever Visionary Voices list.
Women in hip-hop continue to break barriers by being their unapologetic, authentic selves. TikTok is helping female rappers carve a space for themselves in what was once considered a boys’ club. While rap stars like Nicki Minaj and Coi Leray continue their run as TikTok darlings, emerging artists like GloRilla, Ice Spice, and Lola Brooke launched onto the charts after introducing themselves to a broader audience on the platform. Propelling their faves to first-time Billboard chart appearances and first-ever Grammy nominations, the TikTok community continues to invest in the success of the next generation of female rappers.
During Black History Month, TikTok Music is highlighting female rappers with our #WomeninHipHop campaign, launching on Feb. 22! Over the past few years, TikTok has become the foundation for established and emerging female rappers. Stars like Nicki Minaj and Coi Leray have continued their respective hot streaks as beloved faves, while the next generation of emcees including GloRilla, Ice Spice, Big Boss Vette, Latto, Lola Brooke and so many more have netted viral hits and gained Billboard traction by making dents on the charts. From first-time Grammy nominations to breaking records, the next generation of female rappers is thriving on TikTok.
And they’re here to show love back! To celebrate the affectionately known “rap girlies,” they will be featuring Big Boss Vette, Latto, Monaleo, Coi Leray, and Exmiranda on the Bremner Billboard above Scotiabank Arena in Toronto from Feb. 22-28! The billboard will honor these fearless women making history in the genre. They’ve also partnered with MuchMusic to produce interviews with Rico Nasty, ExMiranda, Big Boss Vette, and Haviah Mighty to discuss Black history, music, and culture. The interviews will be featured on MuchMusic’s TikTok channel (2.6M followers globally).
They’re encouraging all women in Rap to participate in #WomenInHipHop by using the hashtag in captions starting Feb. 22. They’ll be launching with an announcement from Monaleo on the @MusicOnTikTok channels, and will be featuring Lola Brooke on a RapGirlies playlist banner on our Sounds page. Beyond that, TikTok is honoring Ice Spice and Maiya The Don as a couple of their #BlackTikTok 2023 Visionary Voices among 15 Black creators who are using TikTok to educate, entertain and advocate for the Black community while making a significant impact both on and off the platform.
