Back in the mecca of Hip-Hop, New York City, a new talent by the name of Keem Shaka is creating quite the buzz. Keem’s musical journey is shaped by a wide array of influences, drawn from his experiences in both the South and West Coast. This blend of backgrounds creates a distinctive sound and visual style that captivates his audience. His music features gritty lyrics, a raspy vocal delivery, and a confident swagger reminiscent of his City, combined with southern beats and catchy choruses, making Keem a standout star.
So it was only right we chopped it up with Keem for an exclusive ’87 interview. He goes in-depth about his new single “5 Star,” his musical inspirations, traveling the world, closing out 2024 and much more.

Your new single “5 Star” is finally out and making quite the waves. How does it feel?
Keem: “Man, it feels great! I want it to keep getting love .. it’s a 5 Star Summer!”
The single is self-explanatory but what was the inspiration behind “5 Star?”
Keem: “It’s [honestly] how I live. Everything 5 Star.. nothing less. And most importantly, I like to keep a 5 Star chick with me at all times.”
You just released the accompanying video as well. How was your experience shooting the visual?
Keem: “Shooting the video was a lot of fun, just as I expect [haha]. High energy, beautiful women.. it came out [super] wavey.”
You have your own unique sound, but name us some of your inspirations?
Keem: “Definitely Hov, who we all know is the GOAT. Wayne too is a big inspiration for me. And last but not least, I’d say Future.”
You travel a lot, what are some of your favorite places that you’ve traveled?
Keem: “London was fire. I had [a lot] of fun out there. I’m big into fashion and we all know its one of the staples of thre fashion world so it was dope to be [out] there.”
Being from New York, do you feel NY is in a good musical space right now?
Keem: “I feel [like] New York is on its way to being in a great musical space again .. after this summer, it’s gon’ be lit.”
You’ve released a slew of successful singles but fans are now eager for your debut album? Can we expect it anytime soon?
Keem: “In time, right now i’m focused on 5 Star it has a lot of life left, the album is done though, but everything about timing. The album crazy.”
“5 Star” is your biggest record to date — how do you plan to follow-up and close out the rest of the year?
Keem: “Going to keep pushing 5 Star, go bigger and bigger, and I have some surprises in the tuck. We just getting started.. trust me.”
