Gearing up to finish out the year on a high note, today, powerhouse producer Powers Pleasant releases his highly-anticipated new album, LIFE SUCKS. Ahead of the project’s release, he surprised fans with four singles that feature a slew of notable collaborations, including tracks with Joey Bada$$, Denzel Curry, AG Club, Audrey Nuna, Jasiah, and Saba, among others.
LIFE SUCKS, out now via Mass Appeal, elevates Powers’ industry-defining sound with new anthems. The album not only highlights his versatility as one of the most sought-after beatmakers but also his ambition to bring out the best in his contemporaries. Doing so has aided Powers in achieving multi-platinum status, cementing his position as a prolific figure in today’s rap landscape.
Earlier this week, he continued his obsession-worthy run of hip-hop bops by dishing out four songs off of his sophomore album. The new singles, in addition to previously released cuts set the stage for LIFE SUCKS, Powers’ first full-length project on Mass Appeal. It also holds weight as his follow-up to 2019’s Life Is Beautiful, marking the BeastCoast member’s first offering since a two-year hiatus.
On the new album, Powers shares: “‘LIFE SUCKS’ is a reflection of my experiences and influences, shaped by the chaos in my life. I’ve always absorbed my surroundings and turned them into art. While making this album, life really did suck—COVID-19 was everywhere, BLM protests were happening in Brooklyn where I lived, and the future felt uncertain.
In the middle of it all, I turned to creating music as my escape from depression. Surprisingly, despite the chaos, I realized life isn’t all bad—it helped me find myself and see beauty in the madness. From the high-energy tracks like ‘Rumble’ and ‘Shmoke’ to the deeper, introspective songs like ‘That’s Tough’ and ‘Know Me Now,’ ‘Life Sucks’ captures the highs and lows of life.
My journey to this album wasn’t easy. Eight years ago, I signed a deal but didn’t own my masters. Label changes put me in limbo while making ‘Life Is Beautiful’ and its sequel. Despite the struggles, I kept creating and moved to Los Angeles during the pandemic. After tough negotiations, I finally found a home at Mass Appeal, where I have both creative freedom and ownership. This album isn’t just music—it’s about resilience and staying true to your art. ‘Life Sucks’ tells my story—a tough, bittersweet journey full of ups and downs.”
