HHS1987: “Welcome, HipHopSince1987 readers! Today, we’re privileged to have the renowned poet, Rich Flow, with us for an exclusive interview. Rich, thank you for joining us.
A bit about Rich Flow: Hailing from the heart of Norristown, Rich Flow has emerged as a poetic force to be reckoned with. His upbringing, colored by the trials and triumphs of inner-city life, serves as the backdrop for his compelling and deeply personal verses. The 610Music signee has been touring the east coast sharing his passion and creativity for spoken word with an audience he had always been familiar with.
Notably, Rich recently captivated audiences with a sold-out performance at the prestigious Voices in Power event, where his raw talent and unapologetic storytelling left an indelible mark on all in attendance. Today, we have the honor of delving into the inspiration and activism behind his powerful poetry. Rich, let’s start by exploring how your upbringing has influenced your approach to poetry.”
Flow: My upbringing played a significant role in shaping my writing style. Growing up, I immersed myself in books, which expanded my vocabulary and fueled my imagination. Despite the challenges of a dysfunctional household, I found solace in alchemy, transforming my experiences into poetic expression.
HHS1987: It’s fascinating how personal experiences can manifest in creative outlets. Can you elaborate on how poetry has been therapeutic for you?
Flow: Poetry has been my refuge during times of despondency. Writing allows me to confront my vulnerabilities and find comfort in creation. It’s a natural instinct for me to turn to poetry as a means of processing emotions and navigating through life’s challenges.
HHS1987: Your authenticity shines through your work. Could you speak more about the importance of sharing your truth, even in the face of potential rejection?
Flow: Authenticity is paramount in my writing. While not everyone may relate to my experiences, I believe in the power of acknowledgment over acceptance. My journey, marked by being ignored or overlooked, serves as the foundation for my storytelling. I embrace my true nature unapologetically, finding strength in vulnerability.
HHS1987: Your activism through artistry is commendable. How do you see poetry as a tool for social change, particularly in addressing systemic racism?
Flow: Systemic racism permeates our society, and poetry serves as a platform for amplifying marginalized voices. As an African American, activism is inherent in my existence. Through my art, I aim to speak truth to power and provide liberation to those in bondage. Art has the power to incite change and challenge oppressive systems
