HHS1987: You recently had a surreal moment at Mercedes-Benz Stadium involving Jay Z and Beyoncé. Can you walk us through that experience?
Travius Keandric: “Yeah man, through my connection with the assistant manager at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, I ended up in a position where I crossed paths with Jay Z and Beyoncé. It wasn’t something I forced. It just happened naturally. I was standing in a room with two people who helped shape so much of the culture and they didn’t even realize they had a hand in shaping me too.”
HHS1987: That’s wild. What did it mean to you personally?
Travius Keandric: “It was a full circle moment for real. The first CD I ever bought in my life was Beyoncé’s Dangerously in Love. And I ain’t even get it from Walmart. I bought it from the bootleg CD man uptown in Marion, Alabama. That was all I had access to at the time. That album stayed in rotation heavy. So years later, to be in the same space as her? That hit different. That little boy from the backroads could’ve never imagined this.”
HHS1987: Let’s talk Jay Z. What kind of influence has he had on you as an artist?
Travius Keandric: “Jay Z changed how I view longevity in this game. He lets his music evolve with who he is as a man. He doesn’t chase what’s trending. He moves with purpose. He showed me that you can grow, raise a family, build businesses, and still be one of the greatest to ever touch a mic. That’s the lane I’m in. I see myself as a version of that, just from Alabama.”
HHS1987: That’s a bold and powerful statement.
Travius Keandric: “Facts. I’m from Marion, Alabama. Most people never even heard of it, but it’s one of the most historically important cities in America. We don’t have a hospital. Resources are limited. But the spirit there is rich. I’m trying to turn pain into purpose and be a voice for people who come from nothing. Just like Jay did for Brooklyn, I’m doing for Marion.”
HHS1987: When you stood in that room with Jay Z and Beyoncé, what was going through your head?
Travius Keandric: “I was thinking, look how far I’ve come. I felt grateful but also more motivated than ever. Being in that moment showed me I belong in these spaces. And everything I’ve been building from the music to the business to the impact, it’s all real. And I’m only getting started.”
