HipHopSince1987: You’ve been in the battle rap scene for over a decade. What first got you into battling, and how did it all begin?
Wize Guy: It all started with my passion for lyricism and wordplay. I was always drawn to the competitive side of hip-hop. When I saw battles happening in Canada, I knew that’s where I wanted to be. I started performing locally, and things grew from there. It’s been about 14 years now, and I’ve probably done around 50 battles released on YouTube.
HipHopSince1987: You’ve performed in some of the biggest leagues in the country — King Of The Dot, Smoked Out, Set the Bar, and more. What’s been your most memorable battle so far?
Wize Guy: There have been a lot of crazy ones, but performing in King Of The Dot definitely stands out. That league represents the highest level of battle rap in Canada. I’ve also had incredible experiences with leagues like Beastmode Battles, Capital Rap Battles, and of course, my own platform — Freezerburnt Battles in Edmonton. Being co-founder of that league has been a major highlight for me.
HipHopSince1987: Speaking of Freezerburnt Battles — how did that come about?
Wize Guy: Freezerburnt was created to give Edmonton artists a home base for high-quality battles. We saw a lot of talent here not getting the exposure they deserved, so we built something for the city. It’s become a real staple in the Canadian battle scene.
HipHopSince1987: You’re not just a battle rapper — you’re also an artist. Tell us about your music and your recent album with Deez Waxx.
Wize Guy: Yeah, music’s always been part of who I am. My album Wize Guy with Deez Waxx is something I’m really proud of. It’s available now on Spotify, and it shows another side of my artistry — more personal, more musical, but still packed with that lyrical edge.

HipHopSince1987: You mentioned merch earlier. What can fans expect from the Wize Guy brand moving forward?
Wize Guy: I’ve got shirts available right now, and sweaters will be dropping soon too. It’s all part of expanding the brand — I want people to be able to wear something that represents the grind and legacy of what we’ve built. The logo means something to the culture out here.
HipHopSince1987: You’ve been called one of the best rappers in Canada. How does it feel to be viewed as a legend in the battle scene?
Wize Guy: Honestly, it’s humbling. I’ve always just focused on putting in the work — being consistent, showing up, and representing my city. Hearing people call me one of the best means a lot, but I’m still hungry. There’s more I want to do, more music I want to drop, and more stages I want to touch.
HipHopSince1987: What’s next for Wize Guy?
Wize Guy: More music, more battles, more moves. I’m working on new projects, planning more events for Freezerburnt Battles, and expanding the merch line. I’m not slowing down — this is just the beginning of a new chapter.
