The global music landscape is shifting and artists who understand both culture and strategy are the ones leading the next wave. Zer is one of them. Born in China and now based in Los Angeles, Zer is stepping into the game with a clear vision to build a cross-cultural pop presence that hits in both Western and Chinese markets. And she’s not just talking about it. In fact, she’s building it from the ground up.
Zer’s journey started early, studying piano at five years old and learning from legends like Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. But by the time she hit her teens, she was already evolving. Forming a rock band, writing original music, and experimenting with digital production.
Like many artists of her generation, her breakthrough moment came from watching Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face“ production breakdown online. That moment flipped the switch. Showing her that modern music isn’t just recorded, it’s engineered. From there, it was GarageBand to Logic Pro, and eventually, professional studio sessions in Los Angeles.
By 2018, Zer made the transition from independent uploads to professional recording. Working with producers, learning the business, and understanding how records are built from concept to release. Her first official drop came in 2019 via DistroKid, putting her on streaming platforms worldwide. Then 2020 hit and like many artists, momentum paused. Now, she’s back in motion with sharper vision and bigger plans.
Zer’s sound pulls from both sides of the globe. Western influences like Rihanna, Adele, and Siahelped shape her understanding of global pop appeal. At the same time, Chinese icon Jay Choushowed her how to blend genres. Mixing traditional elements with R&B, rap, and electronic music. Today, artists like Billie Eilishand Doja Cat influence her current direction—modern, genre-fluid, and built for today’s audience.
Nonetheless, Zer isn’t just focused on making records. In fact, she’s thinking bigger. Her goal? Build a global pop brand that resonates in China and the U.S. which are two of the world’s most powerful music markets. She recognizes something many overlook. China’s live music and entertainment market is booming, but there’s still space for new-generation icons to emerge on a global scale. That’s where she sees opportunity.
Zer’s recently released project with Lez Wess, 404: Dreams Not Found, is a perfect example of his mindset. After losing key demo files, instead of scrapping the project, they rebuilt it. In doing so, they used AI to reconstruct the sound while staying true to the original vision. It’s innovation, but with intention. A setback flipped into a statement that no one saw coming.
Zer is currently working closely with collaborator and mentor 2LC² (Fewtcha), while also producing for Lez Wess’s upcoming EP. With new music on the way and a clear international strategy in place, she’s positioning herself as more than just an artist. This time, she’s building a movement rooted in culture, technology, and global reach. Because the industry is watching, if Zer executes the way she envisions, she won’t just be part of the conversation, but she’ll be changing it. See for yourself here at HipHopSince1987.
