Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was straight to the point last night stating that the Eagles must do better in order for Andy Reid to keep his job. “We need substantial improvement,” Lurie said before the Eagles’ 28-10 preseason victory against the New York Jets on Thursday night in Philadelphia. “We have a very good team on paper, and paper doesn’t get you that far if you don’t maximize it.”
With the unfortunate death of Andy Reid’s son Garrett earlier this month and the pressure the Eagles are facing to bring a championship to Philadelphia this could easily be the toughest season of Andy Reid’s 14 years as the commender in chief. Coach Reid has a career record of 136-90-1 along with playoff wins however the birds haven’t won a playoff game since beating the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants in consecutive road games in 2008.
When Coach Reid was asked about Jeffrey Lurie’s previous comment he simply smiled and replied:
“I don’t care about that stuff,” Reid said after the Eagles’ win. “He has high expectations. I have high expectations. Let’s go play. We surely won’t be satisfied with 8-8. We’re striving for better than that. I’m not worried about it. I understand the business. I have a great relationship with Jeffrey.”
Reid’s contact runs pass the season but Lurie made it very clear a extension would depend on this season results. Let’s see if his players will rally around him and finally bring the Lombardi Trophy to Broad St.
