For his first project in over two years, Nelson delivers his most cohesive, refined effort to date in the SevenYe EP. The stark, introspective, and wavy release boasts seven new tracks from the multi-talented artist whose aesthetic and skill set have only gotten stronger—and he’s only 24.
Originally from Philadelphia, Nelson now reps New Brunswick, N.J., but his approach is defined more by his vision than his location. SevenYe carries a smoked-out vibe thanks equally to Nelson’s laid-back rhyming and the hazy instrumentals from noname. He produced the entire project save for introspective standout “CueTheHorns” and upbeat bonus cut “LostTouch,” which were handled by ColdCutts and AAYU, respectively.
There may be several different producers involved, but you wouldn’t know that from listening to the EP. Each track sounds right at home next to the other, and that goes for if you jump from the ghoulish, pure-rap showcase “BurningDaylight” to the more thoughtful, subdued “OpiumDen.” The same can be said for Nelson’s cast of guest features, which includes Speak! getting filthy on “CoolRunnings” and Kyle Rapps dishing boozy bars on “LostTouch.”
SevenYe is out now via RRCB. And if you’re digging it, be sure to check out Nelson’s Bandcamp page to hear his previous work.
