With raw, real-life rhymes and an incredible ear for production, London-by-way-of-New York rapper Big Cousin is making a hefty statement with his debut release, Blue Money. For fans of authentic, no-bullsh*t hip-hop through the lens of a passionate young artist, this EP will easily become one of your standout projects of 2019.
In terms of inspiration, BC points to the likes of Little Brother, Kanye West, Jay Z and Cam’ron, and that definitely shows in how he approaches his art. For one, he’s backed with production from Khrysis, Eric G., Jansport J, and Nottz. And with their slew of crunchy, sample-flipping instrumentals behind him, BC spits introspective raps about his life and times across the EP’s six tracks.
While a majority of the project is a solo affair for this rising rapper, Big Cousin is joined by a pair of guest emcees who have had a serious impact on his career. First, we find the Midwest’s own Stalley on the Khrysis-produced title track, for a collaboration that BC recalls as one of the most important moments of his life. “He gave me some wise words” says BC. “Things that definitely opened my eyes and made me want to take this to the next level,” he adds. And for the EP’s closer, you can find none other than Evidence kicking some slick bars over a Nottz instrumental on “Bleed Respect.” The head nodding instrumental from the VA producer is the perfect backdrop for some slick wordplay from Ev and BC, who will hopefully bless us with more collaborations in the future.
The title track is also accompanied with a visual, under the directorial lens of Deevelop Media who follow the two rappers as they spit their bars on a Hollis street corner. It’s a fittingly chill scenario that captures the blue-collar vibe of the track and the artists themselves.
