TAMPICO, Mexico — Last summer, former Genevan Kalease Reid knew he had to make a big change if he expected to continue his music industry success. He was living in Rochester, in the part of the city where the streets are a dangerous place and people he knew were losing their lives to gun violence.
On July 25 of last year — his 25th birthday — Reid, who goes by Zu Hendrix professionally, moved to Tampico on the Gulf of Mexico, with dreams of building on the triumphs he’d already achieved as a rapper, a hip-hop and R&B artist, and videographer.
“I just was searching nice and safe places in Mexico and close to America and this was the right one, the right city to begin,” said Hendrix, who attended high school in Geneva until 2016. “I took a big life risk coming here alone, not knowing anybody, and now look.”
