Independent music has never sounded so intentional. On Juneteenth, Chicago-based Kenyan artist Chai Tulani released his ninth studio album, Gold Rush, while currently in Kenya, the land where his journey began. And with the help of rising producer-engineer Mixsa (@mixsastudios), this album is already being hailed as one of the most powerful drops of the year.
Gold Rush isn’t just an album – it’s a return to roots, a celebration of freedom, and a spiritual reset. The timing, the location, and the message couldn’t be more aligned. While Tulani delivers some of his most heartfelt, bold, and genre-blending performances to date, it’s Mixsa who crafted the world the music lives in. He didn’t just produce he recorded, mixed, mastered, and directed the soundscape of the entire project.
“Being here in Kenya while dropping this feels like everything came full circle,” Tulani says. “This album is about legacy. About purpose. About freedom not just for me, but for all of us.”
Across tracks like “Gold Rushl ”, t PMARTT “Many Moons ft ONU”, and “Kill The Slave Master”, the album blends Afropop, hip-hop, soul, and cinematic undertones. The sound is massive, yet grounded. Sharp, yet warm. That’s Mixsa’s fingerprint – precise and unshakably emotional.
Tulani and Mixsa’s chemistry is undeniable. Every detail, every harmony, every bass line feels intentional. This wasn’t made for the algorithm. It was made for the people. If Gold Rush is the sound of liberation, then this Juneteenth is its loudest echo yet.
