HipHopSince1987.com sat down with Jay G, one half of the duo MISTA C4 & Jay G, to discuss his journey, musical influences, and the vision he has for the future. From small-town beginnings in Kosse, Texas to making noise with singles streamed thousands of times, Jay G has been steadily carving his lane in the Texas hip-hop scene. In this exclusive, he opens up about his inspirations, the grind behind the music, and what’s next for his career.
HHS1987: First off, Jay G, it’s a pleasure to have you here. Can you talk about what it means to you personally to be in this moment, sitting down and telling your story?
Jay G: Man, it’s an honor to be here, all glory to GOD. First, I want to give a shout out to my cousin’s Sam Walls, Anthony Porch, Lil Tex, Mikey, Big Tank, and Curt Dog. Without them pushing me, I wouldn’t be here today. I grew up in a place you may never have heard of—it’s a small town with a big heart, Kosse, Texas. Later, I moved to Waco, TX.
HHS1987: Take us back to your early days. How did your upbringing and family life spark your interest in music?
Jay G: Honestly, I think I got started in music before I was even born. My mom used to go to this café/club when she was pregnant with me, so I feel like the music was already in me. Growing up, around age seven, I used to dance a lot. My auntie actually gave me the nickname “Heavy D” because that’s who I reminded her of.
I grew up listening to a mix of sounds—R&B, rap, blues, and even country. My favorite artists back then were MC Hammer, Heavy D, Westside Connection, R. Kelly, Luther Vandross, and Billy Ray Cyrus. That balance of genres shaped how I look at music today.
HHS1987: You’ve mentioned that you not only rap, but also make beats and engineer vocals. What made you expand into multiple areas of music?
Jay G: For me, it’s all about creativity and control over the process. I perform rap, but I also love creating beats and doing vocal engineering. My biggest musical influences are Tupac, Pimp C, and Z-Ro. I respect their music and their work ethic, and that inspires me to grind harder, not just as an artist, but as a full-on creator.
HHS1987: Back in 2017, you released Ballad Of A Hustla. What was that project about and how did it shape the next stage of your career?
Jay G: Ballad Of A Hustla was a mixtape/album I dropped in 2017. That project was about my experiences, my grind, and what it takes to hustle not just in the streets but in life. Since then, I’ve done more engineering projects and dropped a few singles. Right now, I’m working on Ballad Of A Hustla 2 and an unnamed joint album with MISTA C4.
HHS1987: What are some of your short-term and long-term goals in music?
Jay G: Short term, I want to do more features, a few shows, and really push my brand out there further. Long term, I want to own and run my own studio, and I’m aiming for at least one million-dollar hit under my belt. Eventually, I plan to pass the company down to my son and let him do his thing. It’s definitely a challenge balancing a steady career with fatherhood, but I’ve been keeping up.
HHS1987: Your track “Way of Life” featuring your cousin Mikey passed 50,000+ streams, and your single “Bigger in Texas” with MISTA C4 received radio play. How do milestones like that motivate you?
Jay G: Man, it’s a blessing. To see people tuning in and really connecting with the music—it just makes me want to go harder. Those milestones remind me that the grind is worth it.
HHS1987: Outside of music, what does life look like for you?
Jay G: When I’m not in the studio, I’m with my kids. Family is everything to me. I also love video games—I’m a straight-up game fanatic. I’d have to give y’all my gamertag next time [laughs].
HHS1987: Before we wrap up, what message would you give to young artists or anyone chasing their dream right now?
Jay G: Stay focused, stay prayed up, and keep grinding. Don’t let where you come from limit you. I came from a small town, but I’ve got big goals. If you believe in yourself and put in the work, it’s possible.
