JWAVY has already experienced chart success, BET Jams exposure, radio rotation, collaborations, and the release of her EP WAVESZN. But one unexpected hometown performance with LaRussell created another defining moment in the Seattle artist’s journey.
The question now is: Will LaRussell be the one to sign JWAVY?
JWAVY, born Jasmine Smith, comes from the west side of Seattle, Washington. Pronounced “J-Wavy,” her stage name is becoming increasingly connected to a sound she and her team describe as the “Northern flow.”
Her musical identity is built around delivery, cadence, authenticity, style, and attitude while remaining true to herself.
JWAVY has worked extensively with her brother, Seattle artist Maribased1. He appears on “Beastmode,” “Sunset,” and “BS” from her WAVESZN EP.
They also collaborated on the popular single “Love Me,” the record connected to JWAVY making her debut on BET Jams. JWAVY can also be heard on Maribased1’s 48 oz’s project on records including “Slide” and “Aquafina.”
Her own catalog has generated notable results.
“Broke Boi” hit No. 1 on Amazon Music’s Movers & Shakers chart and peaked at No. 28 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart while receiving radio rotation across Texas.
The concept behind “Broke Boi” centers on the stereotypical male who attempts to present himself as a baller in order to impress a woman.
JWAVY followed with “Summertime,” a feel-good record made for enjoying the sun, freedom, friends, and the memories that come with the season. Whether someone is rolling solo or spending time with the gang, JWAVY wanted the song to capture both the best and worst of summer while still celebrating the moments that make the season memorable.
Both records are part of WAVESZN.
While the music has helped build JWAVY’s résumé, her appearance with LaRussell at Fremont Friday showed what could happen when opportunity met preparation.
LaRussell had never heard JWAVY rap before calling her up to perform.
“My experience on stage with LaRussell was such a surreal moment,” JWAVY said.
She walked away from the experience with a lesson that extended beyond music.
“He showed me that it’s okay to allow others to shine and how important it is to continue showing love to everyone and that your light will never go dim by supporting the next, it’ll only add to it.”
Doing it in Seattle made the moment even more meaningful.
“The love I received at Fremont Friday in my own backyard was amazing and really pushed me to keep giving music my all,” she said.
She knew that being given an opportunity by someone who had never heard her perform meant she had to make the most of it.
“LaRussell never heard me rap before and for him to take a chance on me I knew I had to seize the moment,” she said.
According to JWAVY, LaRussell’s reaction looked like that of a proud big brother as she rocked the stage.
“The love I received from him and the crowd was top tier,” she said. “That moment became a core memory that I’ll never forget.”
JWAVY says she truly appreciates LaRussell for showing love to an independent artist.
The performance adds another chapter to a career JWAVY is building independently from Seattle outward.
And she wants people to understand that the city has something to say.
“Seattle music is real this ain’t a game it’s a movement!!!!”
