Oregon Ducks Placed on Three-Year Probation, Chip Kelly punished
Chip Kelly, former Oregon Ducks head football coach, took a job in the National Football League just in time.
The Oregon Ducks have been placed on a three-year probation regarding recruiting violations for current Oregon players. According to the NCAA, Oregon has lost scholarships through June 2016 because of Chip Kelly’s failure to monitor the recruiting program.
The NCAA has been following Oregon since 2010. There was some speculation of recruiting foul play. They finally have tapped into something. These violations are caused by the Oregon’s involvement with Willie Lyles, a Houston-based recruiter with his own recruiting company called Complete Scouting Services. A $25,000 payment to Lyles and his services was not sitting well with the NCAA and led to further investigation.
Punishments from NCAA and Oregon Ducks
Over the three years the Ducks now adhere to many consequences imposed by the NCAA and the University. NCAA consequences include:
• 18-month show cause order for Chip Kelly
• One-year show cause order for former assistant director of operations
• Reduction of official paid visits from 56 to 37 until the end of 2015 season
• Reduction of football evaluation days in fall from 42 to 36 and spring 168 to 144.
The consequences imposed by the University include:
• A disassociation of recruiting service provider
• A reduction of total football scholarships by one from maximum of 85 by end of 2015 season
• A reduction of initial football scholarships by one from maximum of 25 by end of 2015 season
A punishment Oregon dodged is the eligibility for post-season play. The Ducks fans are super excited their four-time BCS bowl team, under Chip Kelly, is still eligible for bowl games.
How are the Eagles and Chip Kelly affected?
This sanction should not affect the coaching of the Philadelphia Eagles. Chip Kelly should continue to bring all of his skills he acquired at Oregon to the national level and excel.
Are the veterans going to look at him any differently questioning his input for the draft next year? Absolutely not. However, the question of his leadership and his ability to cover all of the bases will be questioned.
Chip Kelly Moving Forward..
The best way for Kelly to move forward is to make sure all of the members of his team are acting accordingly by NFL rules. He’s now in a different league than college and is unable to coach for a college for a while. With that being said, Chip Kelly can’t worry about those sanctions when it comes to taking on the reconstruction of the Eagles. He needs to assure the Eagles organization his leadership abilities have not been compromised and the success of the organization is his only priority. The Eagles should not have anything to worry about except getting a better record…and deciding whom their starting quarterback should be.
