One of the biggest issues this NFL preseason has been the uncertain status of Indianapolis Colts’ future Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning. Things may have just got alot more interesting in indy.
As a form of insurance you could say, the Colts have signed recently retired QB Kerry Collins to a one-year deal. Manning is still uncertain to be ready for the season opener against Houston due to neck surgery he received this off-season.Collins played for the Tennessee Titans last year and is familiar with the rivals he will face in the AFC south. Manning has yet to play and is doubtful to play this preseason and backup quarterbacks Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky have been anything but impressive so far which lead to Collins being signed.
Manning remains very optimistic he will be ready on September 11th but Colts GM Bill Polian needed to make a move to be safe. Polian also drafted Collins out of Penn State back in 1995 as the GM of the Carolina Panthers. The Colts were also exploring options to sign quarterbacks Marc Bulger, Jake Delhomme and Brett Favre. Yes I said Brett Favre.
Peyton Manning has started every regular-season (208) and postseason (19) game for the Colts since being drafted in 1998. He also started every game for the Tennessee Vols from 1994-1998. The last quarterback not named Peyton Manning to start a regular-season game for the Colts was current 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh. Peyton’s Ironman streak is the largest in the NFL history behind only Brett Favre. If Manning can not start opening week 38-year-old Kerry Collins will be behind center for coach Jim Caldwell and the Colts
