Starting wide receiver Shawney Kersey, Penn State‘s most experienced player at the position, has left the team for “personal reasons,” the Nittany Lions announced on Twitter.
With Kersey’s surprise departure, true freshman Trevor Williams is expected to step into the starting role.
Kersey becomes the third player to leave the team since preseason camp started. Backup left tackle Luke Graham and reserve tight end Dakota Royer both departed in August but remain enrolled at the university. According to team spokesman Jeff Nelson, Kersey also remains enrolled as of Wednesday.
Through two games, the 6-foot-1, 197-pound Kersey had six receptions for 44 yards.
