Charlie Wilson recently chatted with HipHopDX to talk about the influence that The Gap Band and his career had on hip hop. Interestingly enough, as he went along, he did not expect to impact hip hop as much as he did.
“When we was recording records as The Gap Band, I didn’t have a clue that we’d be around or that we would inspire so many people. I didn’t ever think that I would still be here. First of all, I didn’t think I would make it this far. Let’s just get that straight. I thought that I would be dead a long time ago, but God had a different plan for me.”
Wilson has worked with Kanye West on “Bound 2,” “Lost in the World,” and “The Joy.” His songs and The Gap Band songs were sampled on Nas, Snoop Dogg and Pharrell tracks too. Wilson has been an inspiration to many in the hip hop music scene and was honored at the 2013 BET Awards show.
