El Gant’s tough new EP, Spray Music, is a celebration of rapid-fire bars, boisterous production, and dizzying rhymes courtesy of a Brooklyn MC whose name you’ll remember once “All We Know” knocks through your speakers.
Gant is bolstered by the heavyweight instrumentals supplied by 42 Keez, who has previously worked with his fellow Chicagoans such as Twista and YP. But on Spray Music, he and his rapping cohort bridge the gap between the Windy City and Big Apple with blistering hip-hop that hits your ear like a lyrical uzi.
Together, the two have crafted an EP that you can bump in your whip—crank the bass on the Perfect Strangers-referencing “Larry Appleton”—and listen to in more contemplative moments. That’s especially true on “Ride Wit Me” and “That Life,” which close out the project with a more down-to-earth, personal tone. Production-wise, they’re every bit as punishing as the other tracks on here, but Gant pulls away from tongue-twisting braggadocio to shed some light on his come-up and struggles.
It’s those moments that add significant weight to not only Spray Music, but Gant’s career to date, which included last year’s damn-good Beast Academyalbum. As for Spray Music, it’s out now on iTunes. To celebrate its release, Gant is embarking on a small tour across Texas with Bun B, Scarface, Slim Thug, B-Real, Kurtainz, and Z-Ro, along with DJ Sid Wilson of Slipknot. The details are below.
