On the eve of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. David Banner visited Virginia Commonwealth University to serve as the keynote speaker kicking off a week-long celebration honoring one of the greatest men to ever walk this earth. Banner, the rapper/producer/rap-scholar took a few minutes before his speech to sit down with KickRocs’ own Faith to discuss his college experience, balancing the many facets of his life, his upcoming new album God Box, and much more.
Elaborating on the topic of higher education, Banner goes into detail about how learning the art of networking in college presented him with more valuable opportunities to truly connect with people. While he understands social media has it benefits, the Mississippi native feels the importance of the human-to-human connection is getting lost in digital space. “I really think that people like me, more than they like my music,” he says to be the end results of his ability to interact. Many would be surprised to find out that Banner was SGA President in college, an experience that taught him “if poor people don’t invest in power, power will never invest in poor people.” Preach.

Next up for the musician side of David Banner is his latest project God Box, a project that focuses more on his spiritual side that aims to help his fans understand that there is a God inside of us all, however we should be careful not to put God in a box. What exactly does “God Box” mean, like what does it mean literally? The choice of meaning is yours, as Banner recalls an important lesson from fellow musician Erykah Badu stressing the importance of letting the fans make their own connections to the music.
