Like “Gold Vases” before it, Planet Asia and DJ Concept’s “International” is a testament to their determination as artists working to get what’s theirs. It’s also the soulful and catchy final leak off their collaborative LP, Seventy Nine, which drops next Friday (3/25).
The track gets an extra dose of soul from Brownsville, N.Y.’s Marvelous Mag, who captures the message of “International” on his sing-along hook: “And most of my ni**as is tryna get it ‘til the casket drops/ So my grind can’t stop.” For Planet Asia, being sedentary isn’t simply off the table, it’s clearly something he couldn’t even conceive.
The West Coast emcee lives to create and provide for his loved ones, a combination that’s worried those closest to him in the past. “My nana pray I never see the paddy wagon/ Lot of us sent our kids to college off the sandwich baggin’,” he raps on the second verse, which also touches on his current success (“It’s all digital but I still sell a lot of physicals”). These reflective, personal moments are made all the more poignant over Concept’s production, a sample-driven feast for the Boom bap heads out there.
“International” is now available for download off the iTunes’ album pre-order of Seventy Nine, which drops March 25th. The LP will be available for download through all major digital retailers, and can be purchased on CD as well as limited-edition gold vinyl, via Coalmine Records.
