The 2016 Essence Festival took place (June 30-July 3) in New Orleans and some of today’s biggest and brightest urban and African-American stars were on the scene. During Day 2 of the 2016 Essence Festival day conference, director Ava DuVernay not only was in the building to discuss her upcoming plans for 2016, she also introduced us to the cast of OWN’s upcoming series “Queen Sugar” backstage during Essence Fest and on stage with Oprah Winfrey during the closing speech of the Essence Empowerment convention.
“Queen Sugar” is a 13-episode series that will premiere this Fall (Sept 6th & 7th) on OWN and is based on Natalie Baszile’s book of the same title. Starring Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Kofi Siriboe, Omar Dorsey and more, The series follows the life of two sisters, Nova Bordelon and Charley Bordelon, who, with her teenage son Micah moves to the heart of Louisiana to claim an inheritance from her recently departed father – an 800-acre sugarcane farm.
