Recently, I sat down with up and coming Canadian artist/producer Langston Francis to discuss his career, his plans for the future and more. If you ask Me, Langston Francis’ sound is one of a kind and as his career and buzz continue to grow, I see Langston Francis being a major player in the world of music. Checkout our interview below and get to know more about Langston Francis.
1.) I see you’re making big moves in Canada, what is the music scene like up there?
Canada’s music scene is really starting to heat up. Especially in Toronto, there are a number of artists starting to really make waves all over the world.
It’s super inspiring meeting artists and producers from the city that are working at their craft as well.
2.) You have a new single out “Fall From Grace”, what was the inspiration behind the track and what can we expect in the visual piece?
It’s always interesting talking about what songs mean to me because I find as I grow the songs meaning can really change and how it resonates with me can be totally different. I created “Fall From Grace” when I was 14 years old but didn’t drop the track till about 2 years later so some of the thoughts and feelings that I initially associated with the song had changed.
Most recently the inspiration behind the song to me has been about a relationship between two people where one of them doesn’t get what they want out of it.
3.) As a teenage artist, what have been some of your struggles as you’re growing in your career? ‘
One of the biggest struggles for me as a teenage artist is definitely balancing everything. I only dropped my debut single a few months ago so I’m still sort of getting used to the amount of work involved with being a full-time recording artist, doing shows and still maintaining a full-time school schedule.
4.) What are your favorite tools and programs to use when your creating music?
I started out creating music when I was about 10 years old just by playing the guitar and piano and recording myself with a program called Audacity on my dad’s laptop.
When I was a bit older I saved up some money from busking and got myself an iMac. I then taught myself how to use Logic and FL studio.
Still to this day one of my favourite ways of making music is alone in my bedroom with my guitar and piano, however, lately I have been experimenting with a variety of different drum machines and synths.
5.) As your career continues to grow, who are some artists you would like to work with?
I’d love to work with Lou Val sometime in the near future, he’s a super talented and artist from Toronto making big waves all over.
Working with Kanye West and Ed Sheeran are also career goals of mine. Both of their works has influenced me not only as an artist but as an individual.
6.) To date, what’s the biggest accomplishment in your career?
When I was 13 years old I started my own label with my Manager called Humble Rockstars. For me this was a huge turning point in my career because it was the work that we put in together then, that has gotten me to where we are today. I will probably always consider this the biggest if not one of the biggest accomplishments in my career because reflecting back on how young I was, I feel very proud about how hard I worked to get to the point where I was taken seriously, by my now manager.
7.) Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
I see myself having established myself a lot more as a player in the music game. Hopefully have a couple projects out. I’d like to tour every continent and try and immerse myself in as many different cultures and settings as I can.
8.) What has been the difference in your career as an artist vs. being a producer/videographer.
Overall for me it’s all about being an artist in the end. I never really coin myself as any of these titles but with every different medium that I step foot in I bring my artistry and vision with me. Whether it be photos, music videos, design etc. I always try to approach any sort of work in a creative way.
9.) At what age did you realize you wanted to begin a career in music? Can you tell us your best memory of that moment?
I have always had a deep passion for music, I’ve been playing the guitar since I was 5 years old and ever since I can remember I have wanted to pursue music as an actual career. I think one of my best early memories is when I was about 9 I went in to a studio with a family friend and got to record a demo. I remember the feeling when I heard the finished product back, thinking to myself “this is pretty good haha”. From then on I was determined to do whatever I could to continue progressing my knowledge to build and record songs.
10.) We see you are still in high school, what’s it been like balancing being an artist and full time student?
It can be stressful, especially when tons of exciting stuff are happening and I have to sort of switch modes to focus on school. Ultimately I count my blessings everyday though, I always remind myself to just be grateful that I have all these amazing opportunities at such a young age and to remain focused on improving myself in whatever my day to day requirements are.
11.) What do you feel the Toronto music culture brings to the American music culture? Any distinct differences?
Growing up in Canada we are influenced by many things that our neighbours in America are not. From our historical connections with Europe to the melting pot that Toronto is I feel that we as Canadians bring fresh cultural ideologies that feel new to Americans in our Music, Art and Fashion.
