WNBA All-Star Allie Quigley of the Chicago Sky will defend her title in the 2018 WNBA Three-Point Contest on Saturday, July 28 at Target Center in Minneapolis.
Quigley is one of four 2018 WNBA All-Stars in the competition, along with the Seattle Storm’s Jewell Loyd, the Las Vegas Aces’ Kayla McBride and the Washington Mystics’ Kristi Toliver. The six-player field also features the Indiana Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell and the Atlanta Dream’s Renee Montgomery.
The WNBA Three-Point Contest will be televised live during halftime of Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018, which will air nationally on ABC at 3:30 p.m. ET.
The WNBA, in partnership with the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), will acknowledge the players’ work off the court as leaders on social issues and their active engagement with philanthropic efforts. For the second consecutive year, $10,000 will be donated to a charity of the winner’s choice in support of her work in the community.
The charities that participants will represent and compete for are Strong Against Cancer (Loyd); Be A Friend Program, Inc. and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada (McBride); Catch the Stars Foundation (Mitchell); YWCA of Charleston West Virginia (Montgomery); The Patrick Quigley Memorial Scholarship (Quigley); and Pender Country Humane Society (Toliver).
Loyd is averaging 16.1 points, along with career highs of 5.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game for first-place Seattle. With 45 three-pointers, she is 10 shy of breaking her career high of 54 set last season. A first-time All-Star in her fourth season, Loyd is tied for sixth in the WNBA in three-pointers made per game (1.8).
McBride ranks eighth in the WNBA in scoring with a career-high 19.3 points per game. An All-Star for the second time, McBride is shooting career highs of 46.3 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from three-point range (ninth in the WNBA).
Mitchell, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft, ranks second in the WNBA in three-pointers made with 55. Mitchell has hit at least five three-pointers in three games for Indiana. Her scoring average of 12.8 points is third among rookies.
Montgomery is scoring 9.8 points per game in her first season with Atlanta, her highest average since she was a member of the Connecticut Sun in 2013 (10.1 ppg). Montgomery ranks third in the WNBA in three-pointers made with 53. On July 19, she connected on a Dream-record and career-high seven three-pointers against the New York Liberty.
Quigley won the 2017 WNBA Three-Point Contest, which returned to WNBA All-Star for the first time since 2009. This year, Quigley is second in the WNBA in three-pointers made per game (2.3) and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (career-high 43.7). A 10-year veteran, Quigley was selected to her first All-Star Game last season and her second this season.
Toliver is averaging 14.0 points per game in her second season with Washington after winning a WNBA championship with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2016. An All-Star for the second time in her 10 seasons, Toliver is tied for third in the WNBA with Mitchell and Montgomery in three-pointers made per game (2.2) and shares fourth place with Quigley in three-pointers made (52). Toliver ranks 10th in WNBA history in three-pointers made (544).
The WNBA Three-Point Contest is a two-round, timed competition in which five shooting locations are positioned around the three-point arc. Four racks contain four WNBA balls (each worth one point) and one “money” ball (worth two points). The fifth station is a special “all money ball” rack, which each participant can place at any of the five locations. Every ball on this rack is worth two points.
The players have one minute to shoot as many of the 25 balls as they can. The two competitors with the highest scores in the first round advance to the championship round.
