In 2020, we have learnt that there is so much more to do with respect to fighting racism. The fact is that Black people continue to experience it as they walk down the street each day. Unfortunately, children are also struggling with this issue. In a recent video that surfaced, one can see a girl’s high school basketball game in Washington proving this.

At a high school basketball game in Connell, the footage shows Washington becoming vile as white students seated at the bleachers began to yell racist things at two Black girls, who were sisters, when they were attempting to make baskets. They not only yelled the term “monkeys” at them, but also went on to make monkey sounds and gestures, until the coach had to step in. As soon as the coach, Brandie Valadez, realized what happened, she yelled that their behavior was racist. She also ensured that the Connell athletic director was informed about this. Jim Jacobs, the superintendent of N-F-S-D stated later that the athletic director asked to students to stop behaving that way and then stood near them to monitor their behavior.

Furthermore, Doug Burge, the superintendent of the Zillah School District, from where the Black students hailed revealed that an investigation was underway. He added that in Zillah School District, diversity is valued and they want to create schools wherein students feel safe physically and emotionally. The school take’s complaints seriously and they remain committed to helping with the investigation of Connell School District.
