Beaumont may not be the biggest town in the wide state of Texas, but that hasn’t held Big Jade back from being one of the region’s strongest spitters. Months removed from her critically acclaimed debut album, Pressure, Jade is back with a brand new ten-track mixtape, Jade Wins. The project pays homage to some of rap’s biggest and best records. She puts her Texas spin on classic’s such as Busta Rhymes’ “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See,” Kelis’s “Milkshake,” and Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss,” which Jade shared as a music video earlier this summer.
The tape kind of reminds me of Lil Wayne’s classic No Ceilings mixtape series, and it makes sense Jade would find influence from the Hollygrove legend, given Beaumont’s proximity to Louisiana. Where Jade shines brightest on this collection of freestyles and remixes is when she flips songs like Z-Ro’s “Mo City Don” and Lil’ Keke’s “Southside.” It’s clear that Jade has studied what’s made Texas rap so vital to the game, and she’s here to prove that she’s ready to carry the torch for years to come.
