The Hip-Hop community and music lovers around the world were saddened by the untimely passing of one of its beloved New York artist; Fred the Godson. Born, Frederick Thomas, the Bronx rapper passed away due to complications from the Coronavirus on April 23, 2020. A master of wordplay and a pioneer of punchlines, Fred collaborated with artists such as Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Pusha T, Raekwon and more.
A South Bronx native, Fred experienced poverty growing up, which helped him to see the youth through very relatable eyes. A resilient spirit who learned to master his own adversity, Fred `was dedicated to and aspired to help build up his community. Reaching national fame in 2011, Fred remained a consistent force in the Bronx and throughout New York City, participating in yearly back to school events, food and clothing drives, domestic violence awareness events and more. He mentored aspiring artists as well as at risk youth, inspiring them to stay dedicated to their passion.
Shortly after Fred’s passing, the Fred the Godson Foundation was created to carry on his legacy for his children and family, and the commitment to his dreams for the Bronx. The mission is to inspire, empower and nourish individuals, children and families in underserved communities, starting with Fred’s birthplace. The foundation will foster community unity through the common pursuit of wellness, prosperity and opportunity.
They say legends never die. Their legacies live on through their work, loved ones and those whose lives they have touched. Some even get streets named after them! The Fred the Godson Foundation is elated to announce and invite you to join them on Monday, February 22, 2021 from 10:30AM-1:00PM for the unveiling of the street co-name Frederick “Fred the Godson” Thomas Way in honor of Fred’s life and legacy. Family members, celebrities, community leaders, fans and more will gather for this ceremony. Special guest speakers include Ruben Diaz Jr., Fat Joe, Jim Jones, Sway Calloway, Mysonne, Hot 97’s DJ Bobby Trends, Justina Valentine of MTV, elected officials and more. Complimentary hot beverages and hand warmers will be provided for those in attendance. The ceremony will close with a special live performance by Jaque and TBM Fat Boy Izzo.
Fred’s wife and children would like extend a heartfelt thank you to the Fred the Godson Foundation, Council member Rafael Salamanca Jr. of District 17 in the South Bronx, Bronx Borough President Ruban Diaz, 41st Precinct and the Bronx community for helping make the Frederick “Fred the Godson” Thomas Way street co-naming possible.
