New York music legend DJ Viggi recently moved to Los Angeles and just dropped a new EP!
We sat down with him to understand his creative process and how hip-hop music has influenced his life!
What got you into Hip Hop culture?
Growing up I had a brother 10 years older than me, so I was really young listening to Snoop, Tupac, Biggie, Wu Tang, the Fugees and so many more….
It was music, and at the time I didn’t understand what they were saying most of the time, but I lived the melodies and the cadence.
It always stuck out to me their voices and the way they delivered the words and shared true stories of their struggles.
Hip hop found me and influence me from a young age right from the start!
Who is your biggest influence in hip hop?
That’s so difficult to answer, because we are going to have to consider so many icons to the game.
From lyricists to amazing songwriters to the production. Old and new…
I gotta go with Christopher Wallace, “Notorious BIG” as my number one artist of all time.
He was the full package, had lyrics, flow, melody and that swag.
He paved the way for Jay Z to be passed the torch.
As I continue to build my musical library I’d love to sample more Biggie and bring his influence into my vision.
When did you decide you wanted to be a DJ?
I always had an ear for music and I would think about mixing songs I liked together.
Stripping a track of the low drums to the bass,from another track and give the track a whole new heartbeat and sound.
I decided from fairly young, probably in middle or high school… that music was for me in some shape or form
Using the DJ equipment I had at that time became my way of entering the world with a creative direction.
Producing has been my next step to further the vision.
Who’s your favorite producer?
Dr. Dre is the easy pick but there’s a kid from Chi-Town that everybody knows that I think it’s so hard to not consider, Kanye is such a beast at making a track and then turning that vision into an album.
Honestly one of the most brilliant artists from every angle in the game. But his production is top-notch on everything he touches and it would be an honor to work with him and understand his process.
Who is your favorite current artist?
Fivio Foreign. New York City gotta represent!
I love his flow and the energy he brings to his music.
Who do you want to work with/collab with?
Everybody man. I’m wanting to have features with all the top artists and see what we can create and make bangers that everybody will listen too.
I want to play the biggest shows and connect people through music.
