C-Mack-Cover-Art-copy-408x500 Interview With Upcoming Artist C-Mack

What made you want to become a musician?

My desire to become an artist came from wanting to have a voice. Wanting to be heard. I come from the Eastern Shore of Maryland/Delaware. A place rich with culture but lacking in visibility. There’s a story here and I always felt like that story, and that perspective we have here deserves a voice. Being that voice not only for myself, but to help lift up other artists in my area. This is what pushes me to be my best self as a musician.

What are some accomplishments that you are proud of?

Being able to independently release two projects under my own imprint. My first album ‘Lightning In A Bottle’ crossed 100k streams in its entirety, and then my newest album released in May ‘Rose Colored Lens’ hit 250k streams in less than 3 months. Having my first mixtape hosted by DJ Khaled and having features with artists like Freeway, Mozzy, and Fat Trel on my resume means alot. Most recently, I was invited to Atlanta to be on the Birthday Bash Who’s Hot event which was super dope!

What’s your artist name and your life history?

C-Mack… my real name is Charlie Makoa. My family gave me the nickname Charlie Mack from the old Fresh Prince song “The First Out The Limo”.  I was Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but most of my life has been spent in the DMV, more specifically the Eastern Shore. Most of my younger years were spent in Maryland, but I moved to Delaware in my early 20’s and most of my family and kids live there as well.  I’ve always been known as the ‘rapper’, no athlete or classically trained stories to tell, just that everyone always knew me by how well I could spit.

What strengths do you have that you believe makes you a great musician?

I feel like my songwriting ability and witty punchlines are my strengths. My evolution is also important for me in my effort to be a great musician. I have expanded my R&B lane and I have become more diverse in my ability to create well rounded music. I enjoy taking familiar concepts and giving unfamiliar takes on them… One of my favorite cuts off RCL is Ms. Only Fans which we spin the classic Ms. Officer record but I pay homage to the popular pay-per site in a similar but different way. Staying outside of “the box” is what I strive to do on records.

What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?

The creation of new sounds, I LOVE to create. Creating moments out of nothing in the studio is what feeds my passion. I don’t write my music, I typically feel it. Whatever comes to me in that moment, and I feel like that is the root of what passion is. Being in music and creating for 15+ years definitely has tempered my ability and how I make music, but I have always strived to make my music in the moment. Music is the greatest love I’ve ever known.

What is it that makes you different from other artists?

I know it might sound cliche, but my authenticity is my greatest asset. It feels like my audience can feel that when they experience my music.  The genuine vibes my records bring. I can make songs that can punch your head off metaphorically, while creating melody driven songs that are super relatable. I feel like the R&B sounds I make are more geared to the ‘toxic’ love stories and people understand that approach. My ability to create the “real world” picture is just something that I feel other artists lack sometimes. I was told by an A&R recently that I should pick a lane and stay in it, and that’s exactly why I remain independent. A Lot of artists sign the deal, albeit to take care of family, pay bills, or buy the chain etc. For me the music has and always will come first.
